Taking care of our well being is totally in our hands. While stressful situations are an inevitable part of today’s life, especially during the pandemic, our response to the situations is completely in our hands.
You might be surprised to learn that certain nutrients in foods have been shown to reduce anxiety or help the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine — and we all want to feel as good as we can during these times of uncertainty. Constant stress and anxiety can weaken our immune system. Therefore, incorporating the right nutrients in our diet could help boost the immune system as well as reduce the feelings of anxiety.
Your Healthy Grocery List & Must-Dos!
Here are some suggestions to help you up your nutrient quotient, manage stress and provide your body with the much needed physical and mental energy to manage your health:
Eat the rainbow
Vegetables and fruits contain a myriad of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all of which help to boost immunity. Make sure to get at least three servings of vegetables and 1-2 servings of fruits in a day. Eat the rainbow! The more colour you add to your diet, the wider the variety of nutrients you get exposed to.
Include healthy fats
From keeping the gut healthy to keeping your moods stable as well as our skin healthy, fats go a long way in our physical and mental well being. Specially fats rich in omega 3 such as salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, avocado, help control inflammation and improve our overall health and reduce the risk of a whole lot of lifestyle disorders.
Up your intake of B-vitamin rich foods
During stressful times, our body’s requirement for B-complex vitamins goes up. Stress is physically and emotionally draining.
B-complex vitamins help release energy from our cells, thus upping our energy levels. So eat foods that are rich in these nutrients, such as whole grains {Amaranth, Whole Wheat, Jowar (Sorghum), barley, rice), Sweet Potato, Legumes and Fruits.}
Plan your meals in advance
When you’ve planned your food ahead of your day, the chances of reaching out for junk are much lower. When you stock up on healthy foods and make sure to eat at regular intervals, your blood sugars also remain stable, keeping your moods more upbeat.
Hydrate
Our bodies are almost 60% water. Hydration is the key to good energy levels. While we do know that drinking water helps keep us hydrated, certain drinks like buttermilk, lemon water, coconut water give us an added burst of minerals, which makes us feel even better, by replenishing our mineral stores.
Besides food, regular exercise and quality sleep are key factors that contribute to our overall health and well being.
Pick an exercise that you enjoy and would look forward to. It could be anything from a sport to riding a bike to yoga. Exercise doesn’t only mean going to a gym and lifting weights. Exercising helps release endorphins, which are feel-good hormones.
A well-rested night sleep not only increases your energy levels but also keeps our hormones balanced, skin glowing, digestion in place and moods stable. Try maintaining a fixed bedtime and wake up time. Also avoid exposure to your phone and tv an hour before going to bed, dim the lights, light a candle and create a stress-free sleep environment for a beautiful sleep.
There is a famous saying – “Take care of your body; it is the only place you have to live.”
Living well is a choice we make every moment. Staying healthy and taking care of ourselves requires effort, but that is the only way to live happily!
Thus the Importance of Good Nutrition is critical for a healthy mind and body.
